1934/35 Melbourne Centenary Florin MS64

1934/35 Melbourne Centenary Florin
Weight 11.31 grams
Composition 92.5% Silver, 7.5% Copper
Mint Melbourne
Grade MS64

The Melbourne Centenary Florin is my personal favourite of the entire Australian Pre-decimal range. It encompasses several elements of collectability and desirability for any keen collector.

  • low mintage of 75,000 with only 54,000 avoiding the melting pot.
  • The introduction of these florins sparked controversy due to the naked rider being portrayed, (note: this was a conservative society in the 1930's).
  • Their initial reception was quite mild as they were being sold for 3 shilling each (1 shilling premium above face value) in a time of significant economic struggle.

  • Many examples remain in high quality due to the commemorative nature, they were not intended to be heavily circulated/spent.
